Finding Your Blog Niche…Or Like Me…Not.

by Author: Jade Lloyd

Apparently, to be a successful parent blogger you need a niche.

Need’ like my son needs a ham sandwich at 2am. Examples of niches being; delia’esk cooking, sofa’s…..I mean home-style, looking genuinely awesome all the time with outfits that I would love to pull off and blogs that focus solely on discussing the different faces of Ryan Gosling…I hope that site exists. Everyone has things that they love, or areas of expertise. Even if it is simply being able to make your tongue touch your nose.

Niche ‘a specialized segment of the market for a particular kind of product or service’, from the Old English word for, ‘I do not have one’.

My bottoms large enough, if I could find my niche I could, I think, fill it…

This blog is a haphazard mix of things I need, like a mother’s handbag. It is for tips and for tales, for when I want to greedily unleash onto a page all of my feelings; it is my deep breath, it’s where I want to share my happy moments. Sometimes it’s for crap with glaring grammatical errors.

It is imperfect but it is mine. It is clumsy and kind and a little scruffy, just like its creator. She is a trier.

Blogs are like characters; actually I think they are the screen characters of the bloggers who write them, bordered with bold fonts and framed photos. There are so many amazing blogs out there and almost three months into exploring the wilds of the blogverse I have only begun to scratch the surface. I am like man discovering fire…or a woman discovering blogging, whilst rediscovering wine.

I read pages from pro-blogger mums who bust their lady balls to have gotten where they are; blogging is a hard won business and who are the epitome of empowerment.

I peruse blogs that make me howl with laughter and sketches that light up my face when the rest of the world is dark and hard…I ponder heartfelt posts that make my chest ache with all the things I could never say.

There are those that parody and those that are wonderfully, enviably silly, creativity glimmering with each click of my mouse. There are the honest parents who offer you a post that reflects your reality; that make you feel that you are worth it, that you are doing great even though you are wearing yesterday’s pants. There are the daddy bloggers that give me an insight into a world of love I never knew. There are the styles, bakers and the makers, blogs that offer you a slice of knowledge and opinion, encourage you to think of things wider than yourself and your family. The fighters, campaigners, awareness raisers.

There are new bloggers testing the waters and reaching out…

If you read that description and thought hey she’s writing about me, I am.

There are many parents in the world, and many blogs to partner them, a sea of sleep deprived voices. I refer to my favourite saying, diversity is good look at how successful skittles are. I may not have a niche but I have a voice, it is sometimes hesitant, sometimes confused but always as honest as it can be. Parenting itself is not unique, parenthood is not niche, it is a common occurrence but each parent is unique.

Blogging gave me a voice when I thought I had lost it.

So that is my flowery way of saying bugger the niche. I will ask Santa for one at Christmas, thank you for reading although I am niche less. At least I am not trouser less.

Tonight I am going to Google what a ‘successful’ blogger is. Then I will probably have a glass of wine and write my own definition.

Disclaimer: If you were expecting a peppy ‘how to find your niche bullet pointed how to’, sorry I failed you with my wittering’s, good luck and god speed on your quest. Blogs are about content. It’s good to try lots of stuff (except cartwheels at 28…don’t ask)…write what fits with you. Your blog is built by what you want and expect it to be, not others.

A triangle can’t fit into a square.

If you have a niche good on you. Tip of the hat. If you want a niche for popularity for a profitable blog you could do a keyword search for the topic and compare how popular things are, read read read and see what you like.

Write well and enjoy it, passion always sneaks through the lines.

I have a niche called “Dad”. Since I’m a guy with two kids I seem to fit the role perfectly. I love nicheless blogs. They know how to have a good time. What is life without variety? “Niche, Old English for ‘I don’t have one'” was hilarious! Thanks for the laugh!

Love this Jade! It is really good. You write about real life about real things. You tell the world about a side of parenting that is fun and honest. Love your sarcasm too. Finding a niche is such a journey I think. You will never know it straight away. It takes time because we all change too so then our blog also changes. I don’t think I have a niche either and I don’t really care to be honest. I only know that I love doing what I do what ever it is LOL. I love going to events and love reviewing products/toys and all of that together with doing videos. I don’t think any of that actually belongs to a specific niche but it is just what I like to do and enjoy! So that is what I really care about. You shouldn’t worry either and just keep loving what you are doing because it is very good. Thanks so much for sharing this at #KCACOLS. It is lovely to have you. Hope to see you again on Sunday, 🙂 x

Well if such a highly thought of blogger like yourself doesn’t have a niche and is kicking blogging ass then I feel much better 🙂 Though I think your niche is being so kind and supportive to other bloggers, and hosting an amazingly huge and popular linky! Thank you so much for your wonderful comment as always xxx

This is fab! I don’t feel like I have one, and it seems everyone else has got one. but I love this ‘I may not have a niche but I have a voice’ and that’s the most important thing #KCACOLS

There are so many bloggers without niches and they are successful and amazing I think a blog is about you and what you put into it and that makes it special xx

I’m a newbie blogger and I’m exactly the same,a mishmash of what I like, what I do and whatever I feel like spouting on a particular day! #KCACOLS

I think writing that way makes everything feel very honest as you have not really planned to write and that makes for fab reading 😉 xx

I really like your idea here, that your voice is much more important than a niche. Most of the blogs I read are a bit of a mish mash of posts, but the voice is the same all the way through, and I like that! x #KCACOLS

I also don’t have a niche (I do on the travel blog, obvs) but I made the decision I either write for myself or I bore myself writing for others. I don’t make a tonne of money but I do get out of it what I need to, so that suits me. For the record, I don’t tend to find a lot of those in the niche that interesting for long, because they’re always the same….#KCACOLS

I just write about what is going on in our lives and about things that I have liked. Because I care about these things I think it connects me to readers, if I tried to write for a niche and didn’t really feel it, people would know and not really want to read it.

I don’t have a super defined niche – other than family lifestyle, which is about as broad as they come haha.

I have heard this saying so many times recently and yet I had literally no clue what it meant either. I don’t think I have found my niche, I just assumed it would happen as I kept writing – like it would suddenly become obvious to me and anyone who reads my blog. I’m so glad you wrote this Jade, it makes me feel a little bit less under pressure to find said niche and more free to just write all the random crap that rattles round my head at 2am. Fab post as always. #fortheloveofBLOG x

I’ll drink to that! From another non-niche sitter, I love that I have the freedom to write about whatever I want. That’s why I started blogging after all! You’re writing has a clear style, it’s honest and from the heart, and that’s niche enough as far as I’m concerned. #KCACOLS

Reply
theparentingjungle 22nd June 2016 - 7:42 pm

Whoop what are we drinking!? Thank you my lovely that is such a compliment…I love reading other people’s blogs and am always awed by the ideas and the humour of the posts, just going to keep swimming swimming as Dory says….x

I am *SO* much the same. My personal blog is me. I write about whatever I feel like, because that’s me! And some of the most successful bloggers I know do this, too. I understand that this niche thing has been adapted from business start up advice, but I’m not sure it’s 100% relevant to blogging.

Thank you for a lovely post, I am feeling much more reassured..I thing sites and blogs develop over time and with the writer, I am very much enjoying it at the moment and only have the time to post once a week, but I enjoy it and need to not loose that 🙂 xx

I love your writing style, Jade. It’s so natural. We all have niche nightmares, believe me. But our blogs are bound to grow and sometimes change so much from the original germ of an idea we have. I’m all over the place with my blog, too, but it would kill me to try and fit a niche at the expense of writing for the love of it…I tend to do some serious home interiors ones and then I feel it gives me the chance to have a random musing about what I really like to talk about such as why I want a dog or what I’m putting in my room 101! If you write well and have a great ‘voice’ that people connect with, then I say’ niche smeesh’!!! I like you, with or without the niche…BUt would prefer your trousers on if thats okay with you #KCACOLS

I think the most important thing if you want people to read your words is to be interesting, but that might be what I tell myself as I go off to write about some other crazy topic that is only tangentially about parenthood #fortheloveofBlog
