Looking for lockdown gift ideas for a loved ones birthday?

The pandemic has bought many challenges and one of the most difficult things so far is not being able to see our friends and family (followed by furlough worries, attempting to teach unruly children fractions and the closing of all hairdressers…) Not being able to see and physically celebrate with loved ones mean that birthdays over lockdown, especially for older members of the family that are likely very isolated, need to be made even more special.

Have a virtual part over zoom, send them a handmade card, invest in a delivery friendly gift. Though we can’t go out and hug them, we can still brighten their day with wonderful lockdown present whilst also supporting small businesses in challenging times. Think letterbox flowers or a magazine subscription! Looking for lockdown birthday presents needn’t be difficult – here is a list of lockdown gift ideas to inspire you that are just a couple of clicks away from someone’s door. Many will add cards or gift wrap too!

Perfect for a garden bar!

As long as we’re all home and can’t go to the pub, alcohol makes an excellent gift for friends and family. Why not try something new?

#Cranes cider.

Founded and developed by craft brewers – twin brothers Ben and Dan Ritsema, Cranes fruit ciders have 30% fewer calories and 40% less sugar compared to brand leaders. Gluten free and vegan friendly, they are available in three refreshing flavours: Blueberries & Apples, Cranberries & Limes and Raspberries & Pomegranates. A gift set is the ideal present for any cider lover during sunny lockdown days. The boxed gift set includes three 500ml (4%) bottles to sample the full range and a premium large Cranes engraved Cider glass which is a nice touch. The gift set retails at £16.99 and is available online from Amazon (single bottles also sell in stockists such as Morrisons, Sainsburys and Asda). The blueberry cider is perfect for me who loves sweetness and my OH who loves the traditional dry cider prefers the cranberry and lime. It is basically the taste of summer.

#Mermaid Gin.

Yes, you heard right. The seven-year-old in me got excited at the mythical design and branding and the 30 (something) in me went ‘hurrah’ that is one large bottle of gin 70CL (42%).

Hand crafted on the isle of Wight’s only distillery Mermaid Gin comes in a beautiful plastic-free, recyclable bottle with biodegradable paint, which is created to give a mermaid scales effect. It is sealed with an all-natural cork with a wooden top and a unique, plant-based seal. The bottle alone is something very special, celebrating the commitment to sustainability. The distillery has also eliminated plastic and bubble wrap, plus plastic sealing tape (it seals cases with metal tags) from its production processes. The gin is a small-batch which utilises 10 botanicals including: local samphire, (foraged from the Isle of Wight’s cliffs – and known locally as “Mermaid’s Kiss”, hence the gin’s name,) Boadicea hops and citrus zest. It is also both vegan and gluten-free. At £40 Mermaid Gin offers a smooth, refreshing taste perfect with plain tonic and a slice of cucumber!

Because we all need a caffeine hit.

People’s cafetière and teapots are getting quite the workout with cafes closed. Give tired parents the gift of aromatic beans and or traditional leaves because instant just isn’t cutting it. Trading since 1886 Whittards is a popular, undeniably British and well-established beverage retailer selling tea, coffee, hot chocolate and tableware. I trust this brand to deliver and they do.

#Coffee Jetsetter’s Gift Box.

This £44 coffee gift set comes beautifully boxed packed with 100% ground Arabica San Agustin Colombia medium roast valve pack, a smooth lemony coffee alongside dark roast Monsoon Malabar valve pack, a rich, smoky brew from the Indian coast. Both come in 200g protectively packed omni-ground coffee for use in any coffee making style. To brew it, nothing beats the convenient, compact, stylish AeroPress that has had a lot of praise on social media. Standard UK Delivery takes (3-5 working days) and costs £3.95 or is free for orders over £35. Next Day UK Delivery is available at £6.95.

Offering one of the quickest (in as little as 30 seconds!) and simplest ways to brew coffee, it is pressed through a compostable paper filter producing smoother and lighter coffee than a cafetiere. You can make the coffee as strong as you like depending on how much water you add. The press comes with 350 100% compostable filter papers, coffee scoop, funnel and stirrer. The total height of the press is 27cm, but it is compactable for storage and lightweight but made if sturdy plastic. The press is also is easy to clean – suitable for the top shelf of a dishwasher; however, we recommend washing by hand. The ground coffee will come out as a solid tablet of coffee perfect for using as plant fertiliser.

Fancy a run?

I think half the UK has taken up baking (check out our gluten free salted caramel brownie recipe) and the other half have embarked on a new fitness regime! People have invested more time and energy in looking after themselves. Sales in leggings and Yoga mats have increased. Everyone has been attempting Joe Wicks PE lessons.

#Jam Live Free Truly Wireless Earbuds.

Wires are a thing of the past with the freedom to workout in the living room or garden with Jam audios Live Free wireless earbuds (RRP £79.99 on sale for £49.99). With IPX4 water and sweat resistance they have up to 6 hours playtime for lengthy runs and over 54 hours with the rechargeable case. Worried they will fall out? The ear tips come with 3 different sizes with 4 sizes of wings, to ensure they stay put while you move. They are comfortable lightweight silicone and not heavy in the ear. I didn’t hear much background noise, especially when running by traffic. With a generous 15 metre range you can you leave your device to one side perfect for at the gym. The on-board controls mean you can control your music, make and take calls and interact with Siri too. A stylish buy the sound is clean and base good.

Spa treatments and beauty products.

So, what if we have not coloured our hair in weeks or spent too many days in the same pyjamas. Self-care is important and taking some time for personal grooming can improve mood. There is a variety of gifts you can get delivered to their door from bubble bath to make up.

#The Yoto player.

Inspired by Montessori principles The Yoto player (£79.99) is a creative screen-free audio device aimed at children aged 3 years +. More than just a speaker it is designed to be child controlled and the opportunity for listening, learning and play is endless! What’s in the box? Stylishly packaged it includes the Yoto Player, Welcome Card, Magnetic Charging Dock and Quick Start Guide. No complex unpacking, no drowning in wires and need for 300 batteries. The Player requires minimum parental set up with simple instructions. You need to install the free app and connect the Yoto Player to your wifi. The app also allows you to control the player, select content, adjust volume, etc along with parental controls for limiting time.

Simply operated you slot in physical smartcards to play audio content from an ever expanding library featuring stories from popular authors such as Julia Donaldson and Roald Dahl plus a selection of music/lullabies, podcasts, radio stations, educational content and much more. Take the card out and the player remembers the chapter and where you finished. The card price is really reasonable at £4.99, there are a variety of regularly updated free resources including Yoto daily which suit different age ranges. My nine-year-old loves the jokes section. One of my favourite features is the ability to ‘make your own’. Over lockdown why don’t you encourage grandparents to record bedtime stories for something extra special. The limitations are an impressive 100 tracks per card, 100MB file size per track and 500MB total size per any one card.

The pixelated colour display shows content based on what your child is listening too (or a handy clock which shows a sun or moon, depending on the time of the day) which is appealing, fun and colourful but not distracting. The back of the player is triangular, not flat, allowing you to stand the player upright or tilt it back. It is lightweight for portability but sturdy, the bright orange control knobs are not going to break easily from little fingers and are simple to use. Push them in to change modes or rotate them to change volume. The player is built to withstand a few knocks and drops! It also boasts up to 140 hours of audio storage which is a great feature for travelling families on long car journeys etc! There is also the option for Bluetooth connectivity. It is a gift that will mean littles look forward to bedtime.

The flavour range is huge, from classic raspberry, sea salt, chocolate orange, rose water, biscoff and more. They even do blondies. What I love is that they are generous thick slab pieces that arrive moist and well wrapped.

For 2.5 seconds I was worried that Vegan brownies wouldn’t hold a torch to their butter-based friends. I was wrong and need the recipe for these!

Box filled with six yummy chocolate brownies on flatlay.

#Sweet Cakey Thing.

This Hertfordshire company will tick all the boxes for the free from lover. The natural whole food ingredients ARE perfect for coeliac, those with gluten intolerance, and are packed with protein. Sweet Cakey Thing is free, from wheat, gluten, grains, dairy, soya, additives, preservatives and refined, white sugar. The consideration which goes into the ingredients is impressive. They bake with almond rather than wheat flour; and use almond-cream so there is no need for dairy butter or margarine, gums, emulsifiers or lecithin. Olive oil keeps the cakes moist. Fruit curds and compotes are made from scratch. Raw, organic honey and 100% maple syrup are used rather than refined sugars or sweeteners.

Flavours include berry, lemon and chocolate CocoaCrush. A box of 4 sells for 24.99. Handmade in small batches, the sponge texture, saucy middle, and creamy top are delicious. Pot size actually perfect as they are so indulgently rich. What I love is they arrive in glass pots and can be reused. Delivery is free and in temperature controlled delivery boxes.

I would choose SEAMS Hand and Nails Oil. As I believe it is Important for us to maintain the integrity of our skin. I have a loved one who has a birthday coming up whilst we are in lockdown. This product would be useful for that individual. Though I would hope that he would share. Probably he would share with me.

I would love to win the hair products. Please consider allowing competition entry via email, blog comment, etc.

Very much needed at this time of Society Distancing, Coronavirus Pandemic (covid 19) regulations.

Accessing toiletries not easy. Yet they are necessary. A delivery of such products directly delivered to home address :- Would be a real treat, a pamper hamper.
