Mistakes People Make When Selling Their Home

by Author: Jade Lloyd

They say that moving home is one of life’s most stressful moments. While much of the pressure comes from buying another property and moving your entire life there, the act of selling also plays a role. The good news is that while it’s likely that there’ll always be some stress involved, there are things you can do to keep it to a minimum. It’s all about being aware of the mistakes that other people have made, and working to avoid making them yourself. Let’s take a look at some of the most common errors below.

They Don’t Research What’s Involved.

In principle, the act of selling your home sounds simple enough. Put the house on the market, wait for someone to put a bid in, and then collect that sweet cash. Alas, nothing in life can be as straightforward as it seems, and especially so when there are such large sums of money involved. Before you get started, take a read through of everything that’s involved in the process. In doing so, you’ll have an understanding of all that you’ll need to do, without any nasty surprises presenting themselves further on down the line.

They Do Too Much Themselves.

It’s highly unlikely that you have all that much experience when it comes to selling a home. People generally only move a couple of times in their lifetime. If it’s your first hand, then you’ll be a fish out of water, and even if you’ve done it a couple of times, that’s not enough to be an expert. But there are people out there who are experts. While you can handle some tasks yourself, you’ll want to put the bulk of the work in the hands of experienced estate agents. They’ll know exactly what needs to be done.

They Don’t Prepare Their Home.

It would be ideal if you could just list your home as it currently is, and get all the money that you’re asking for. But is this realistic? For most homes, no. Your home is currently set up to suit you; if you want other people to be interested in buying your home, then you’ll need to showcase the potential of the house. This means making everything presentable, and also removing things that present too much of your personality. Potential buyers should be able to see themselves in the house.

They Set a Short Timeframe.

It doesn’t matter what you’re doing: if you don’t give yourself much time to do it, then you’ll be stressed. Even tying your shoelace would be tough, if you only have two seconds to do it! While you can hope to sell your home quickly, in most cases, you’ll need to show a little bit of patience.

They Become Consumed.

Selling a home is a big job, but it shouldn’t be your entire life. You’ll only work yourself into a stressful state if you take this approach. Instead, look at breaking up some of the work by making time for fun — it’ll help to keep the mood light.
