Are you hungry?
Friday night is steak night, well it was before we had a child that would not eat anything that was not beige and spends all our money on hot wheels and Lego ninja figurines.
Steak can also be a contentious issue in our household. Mainly because I am a medium-well done kind of girl and my other half is a rare. I am apparently committing steak based debauchery by overcooking it. He’s a rump I am a sirloin. The kid doesn’t care as long as he can ruin it with ketchup.
The other half has some kind of technical way to tell how to cook a steak properly. It involves touching different bits of your hand and how that feels is how a steak should feel when ready. To me, hands all feel the same, squishy. I know it is ready usually when the smoke alarm goes off.
Tips from a pro
Luckily for the longevity of our relationship Steve Pooley, Chef Director at Jamie Oliver is featured in this tasty looking guide that tells you how you can cook the perfect steak. Now there is a promise.
If you live in the big smoke, save time and head over to Barbecoa London and get them to cook the steak for you. Win.
I realised when I read through this guide I had never taken Leo to a Butchers so we had a trip to the local this morning. Admittedly I had to Google where they were! The men were so kind and laughed when he walked in with his teddy and asked for a piece of cow. They didn’t have blade but we got top rump which was a lovely cut. He then helped me cook dinner (not the hot, or the sharp bits).
So here is proof, a five year old can make the perfect steak with these instructions…
If you need a sous chef in a couple of years…Leo is your man. Neither of us were entirely convinced on massaging it though.
Bon Appetite!
